The UN and human rights

In an interview with Jan Dirk Herbermann, Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey outlines the differences between the new Human Rights Council and the old UN Human Rights Commission. "We hope that after five years, the Council itself will become one of the UN's main organs, like the General Assembly and the Security Council... Regular checks on the human rights situation in all UN member states are particularly important… This means that, with a two-thirds majority, the General Assembly will be able to expel countries [that violate human rights] from the Council."
