Terrorism and forgiveness
The daily publishes an opinion piece by Sánchez Cámara, a philosophy professor, on the occasion of the Third International Congress of Victims of Terrorism being held in Valencia. "The Spanish government is responsible for justice, not forgiveness. The latter, in this world at any rate, depends on the victims alone. And in order for it to be granted, it is necessary for the guilty to repent. To forgive, up to 70 times seven times, is a Christian moral imperative. But just as morality cannot be politically imposed, forgiveness cannot be demanded by one who fails to repent. The Etarras [members of the separatist Basque organisation, ETA] - aside from a few exceptional cases of those who have reformed - not only do not seek forgiveness, but they desire more bloodshed and celebrate attacks. In these conditions, it is impossible to speak of forgiveness."
