New countries in power
Following the summit in Washington it's now clear that the countries of the West will have to grant the rest of the G20 states a greater role in international financial institutions, writes the daily Delo. "The erstwhile powerful 'West', which with its belief in the omnipotence of the free market got us into this mess and now threatens to go down in the face of an increasingly ominous recession, has this time been forced to call on the 'East' and the 'South', where most of the economic growth is expected to take place in coming years, for support. ... The West once pushed these countries aside, but now it will have to give them more power in international financial institutions, because the countries of the West are gradually becoming dependent on their help. This time they begged China to fork out around 2 billion US dollars in foreign reserves to help the impoverished International Monetary Union."

Controversial cover
The title page of the New Yorker magazine featuring a cartoon that depicts the democratic US presidential candidate Barack Obama as a Muslim extremist has caused uproar in the US media. The scandal prompts the daily Delo to examine the role of the media today. "It is a sad fact for the moribund journalistic profession that nowadays only satire addresses the truly serious problems in society that the so-called serious media - which these days are nothing more than advertisers for the special interests of their owners - no longer report on. ... Instead of making this carefully fabricated prejudice the main theme in the media ... everyone is attacking the magazine that dared to depict this stereotype. ... But since the advisers around Obama, who is represented as the candidate for change ... condemned the New Yorker's title page, the neutral observers of America's election campaign fever are asking: where are all these [purported] changes?"

Slovenia's good relations with Russia
Journalist Boris Cibej takes the consecration of a small Russian chapel in Slovenia as an opportunity to reflect on the country's relations with Russia. "Since the break-up of Yugoslavia, Slovenia has proven that it's possible to do successful business in Russia without excessive political manoeuvring. In this respect, the country has never encountered the obstacles faced by other small European states whose positions on Chechnya draw Russian hostility. Perhaps Slovenia's economy is simply lucky in that its politicians haven't paid lip service to Moscow, as other heads of state of former Yugoslavian republics have done."
