The row about liquid gas terminals in the Adriatic Sea
Italy plans to build two liquid-gas terminals in the northern Adriatic Sea – without having presented its neighbours with a feasibility study. Environmental activists from Italy, Slovenia and Croatia have now made a joint appeal to the European Commission calling for such a study to be carried out. According to Laris Gaiser, director of the international research institute Capstar in Verona, this could lead to a heated discussion over the next few weeks. "The terminals in the Bay of Triest are a popular issue used by Slovenia to divert attention from its own unsolved problems. The first of these is criticism from Austria and Hungary of Slovenia's plans to build eight hydroelectric power plants in the protected pasturelands surrounding the River Mura [in Slovenia]. With these endless debates about the hypothetical terminals, we Slovenians are also trying to make it more difficult for the Italians to reach a strategic decision."
