For Ernesto Galli della Loggia on Italian cinema's search of an identity
The historian Ernesto Galli della Loggia notes that 'Italian cinema is suffering from an identity crisis that reflects the crisis the country is going through. ... The strong relation Italian cinema has always maintained with the intellectual-political class has turned it into a summary of the ideologies that marked Italian History during the 20th century, i.e. fascism, social Christianity, communism and Gramsci. ... It was the expression of an anti-bourgeois populist ideology that neo-realism crowned and that we find in the Italian-style comedies, or the cinema of Pasolini or Moretti. ... The crisis of this model has thus been the crisis of Italian cinema. In the globalized west, without proletariat or politics, Italian film is discovering how hard it is to approach democracy and themes that touch the average person. .. It now needs a new relationship with reality. Like Italy, it is looking for itself. "

Silvio Berlusconi launches a new party
The Italian historian Ernesto Galli della Loggia considers the 'Freedom Party' that Silvio Berlusconi is creating with Michel Vittoria Brambilla, who is president of the 'Freedom Circles', a network of political associations run by young entrepreneurs linked to Forza Italia, the current party of the former Italian Prime Minister. "[Berlusconi's] initiative goes to show that Forza Italia was and remains an artificial party: there are no card-carrying members, no executives, no debates ... . There is just the leader and he is the leader for one sole reason: he owns the television stations and a lot of money ... . In which other country would it be possible for the head of a party to surreptitiously create another without mentioning it to any one, and choosing a friend to manage it ? ... Berlusconi's manoeuvre is an attempt to get the centre-right out of a dead-lock, by choosing to found a new party rather than reflecting on the political problems of his coalition."

Italy's role in the Middle East
The editorialist Ernesto Galli della Loggia describes the Italian diplomacy's change of direction regarding the Middle-East. "There is something remorseless about foreign policy. Our country has had a hard time acting on the international scene. Italy's role has changed from that of a country blindly in tow to that of a nation with a frivolous ambition of being part of the vanguard. The assassination of Pierre Gemayel in Beirut and the kidnapping of two Italian volunteers in Gaza are sounding the same alarm bell on the position adopted by Italy over these last few months. After having supported the American line on the Middle-East, we find ourselves with Romano Prodi's government having to take on responsibility and initiative".
