Theatre renaissance in Bulgaria
The Association of Independent Theatre Critics has named theatre director Jawor Gardew, born in 1972, as their person of the year for 2006. In an interview with Nadescha Uschewa, Gardew speaks of the changing scene in Bulgarian theatre: "Actually, you can see a true renaissance of theatre in large cities across Europe over the past two or three years. It's fashionable to go to theatre again; an exceedingly meaningful social and cultural act. Before the 1990s, there were no such tendencies. In fact, the great pessimists even predicted that theatre would disappear altogether under the multi-media pressure of photos and cinema. Today, the reverse is the case - amidst the booming digital era, people again are turning to a living art. And that also is happening in Bulgaria. The theatres in Sofia are packed."
